Psst…there is a comedy video we shot involving Brandon’s interview with Sophia. It will be up around the same time this hits the wire (in about a month.) So subscribe to our You Tube channel if you want to see it when we post it.
Sophia Bush needs a vacation. And after watching “The Hitcher” in theaters this January, many audience members won’t blame her. Described as physically intensive by Bush, the thriller should keep audiences glued to their seats with its over the top intensity…unless it sucks, in which case, the audience will be glued to their seat to watch how much worse it can get…. In the event that “The Hitcher” does suck, you can’t fault Sophia Bush for trying. During a recent conference call with the college media, Bush said, “This film was different because there was a lot of physical preparation that went into getting ready for the film. It was an adjustment for me because I’m not a gym type of girl. I don’t roll out of bed and think, “Yeah, I want to sweat”, I roll out of bed thinking, “I want an omelet The filming for The Hitcher was so physical and demanding though, we went all hours of the night filming these scenes.”
The track record for Hollywood remakes is not very good. Audiences don’t like them, and the studios keep spitting them out for reasons only Stephen Hawking understands. Of course, if you’re talking about Platinum Dune, people just can’t get enough of their remakes. Having worked on the new “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” films, Platinum Dune has carved out, pun intended, a reputation for delivering on remakes. While Sophia didn’t get a chance to work with Michael Bay on this film, she had nothing but praise for
The Hitcher” director Dave Meyers. “He’s been at it (directing) for so long and done so much that people may not be familiar with his name, but they definitely know his work. Working with Dave is great for actors, you see just how much really goes into the film, and the way he did it, he kept the movie real, and that’s why the film is so scary. I jumped several times while watching the movie in editing.”
Sophia Bush is better known among college students and the general public for her role on “One Tree Hill”, but she isn’t worried about being type-casted. “I always like to do different things” Bush said. “I try to play different characters so people don’t know me for just one thing.” Unfortunately, it may be a while until audiences know Sophia Bush as an actor, and not Brook from the popular CW television show. One of the interviewers asked if she still talked to her co-star Lucas (better known to people with a life as Chad Michael Murray.) Not fazed, Sophia answered, “Yes, I was just speaking to him actually. We’re still close, and his friends are my friends, so we do see each other.” Scars didn’t bother Sophia either during the filming of “The Hitcher.” “I’m a total scare junkie, it makes my inner Tom Boy come out I think. We had such a talented crew who worked five days a week and did 90% of the stunts themselves; I lost a lot of hair doing this movie. We got hurt, but it was cool because we would stop shooting and show off our scars like, “that’s going to be a sweet scar.” It makes the movie real.”
What might get to Sophia Bush? Hitchhikers. When I asked her about whether or not she would pick up a real hitchhiker, Sophia told me that she wouldn’t because “nine times out of ten they may be a normal person, but there is that tenth time that you have to look out for. When you read the statistics, its just not worth the risk.” And if you thought real hitchhikers were enough to scare people, Sophia also answered my question about her many fan sites on the Internet. I said, “Speaking of scary, how do you feel about all your Internet fan sites?” and she replied with class and said the sites aren’t actually scary, but are “very flattering.” “They’re not something I usually look at, but every so often I’ll look at a link my family or friends sent me. They’re very flattering, and certainly a sign of the times.”
Fans of the original Rutger Hauer movie may not be disappointed with this new remake. “The new film is a much updated version of the original, and because of Platinum Dune’s approach, there is a lot of suspense in the new film. This film is much more of a thriller than it is a horror movie.” Not only has Sophia not seen the original film, but she also recently purchased the film only to leave it in the shrink-wrap until the new movie is out. “I decided to watch it after we were finished making our film so that my performance would be original, and not like I was just going through the motions of the original film.”
Regardless of whether or not “The Hitcher” is as good as eating yellow colored chunks of ice remains to be seen. But Sophia Bush’s career has nowhere to go but up…after a short vacation “with me and just my dog” she says.
